School fencing has been designed to meet the requirements of life in a high use environment from nurseries to high schools and colleges.

Schools also may employ fences to maximize natural surveillance, or the ability to easily keep watch over school grounds and monitor the flow of individuals into and out of the campus. In setting out guidelines for natural surveillance, the DHS cautions schools to ensure that there are no hidden areas on the school grounds, and also emphasizes that fencing should be placed strategically so as not to obstruct lines of sight.
